Singing & Piano Lessons
Singing Lessons
Singing is good for you!
Singing is an enjoyable and beneficial activity - it can be a powerful way to relax, express yourself, and build confidence. While most people can sing, whether your goal is to sing purely for enjoyment or to pursue a professional career, it is important to learn how to use, protect, and develop your voice in a healthy and sustainable way.
I use proven vocal techniques to help singers develop their voice safely, while giving them the freedom and confidence to explore a wide range of musical styles. I have been singing professionally since 2004 and teaching since 2009, and I also have a strong background in piano, which I have played since the age of 11. I teach from my private studio in Torquay and am a Visiting Singing and Piano Teacher at The Maynard School in Exeter.
Children and Young People
I teach from the belief that children learn best when music is enjoyable and when they feel emotionally safe, supported, and respected as individuals. Singing lessons for children are designed to be fun, encouraging, and clearly structured, creating a secure environment in which young singers can explore their voice freely, build confidence, and develop healthy vocal habits. My role is not to demand performance, but to create the conditions in which curiosity, expression, and skill can emerge naturally.
Adults
I work with adults from the belief that singing should be both enjoyable and empowering. Lessons provide a calm, supportive, and structured space in which singers can explore their voice without judgment - whether returning to singing after a break, building confidence, or developing technique. Progress is guided by curiosity, clarity, and enjoyment, allowing confidence and vocal freedom to grow at a sustainable pace.
Experienced and Professional Singers
For experienced and professional singers, lessons are tailored to the individual voice and repertoire, balancing technical clarity, artistic expression, and long-term vocal health. I work collaboratively to support efficiency, confidence, and expressive freedom, with attention to both vocal technique and the singer’s physical and mental state - helping singers perform with greater ease, resilience, and consistency.
What lessons involve
In lessons, I guide singers through gentle physical warm-ups, breathing work, and vocal function exercises, always tailored to age, ability, individual and developmental needs. Together, we build a suitable repertoire, choosing songs that reflect the singer’s voice type, musical preferences, goals, and abilities.
Repertoire may include Classical Song (English, Italian, French, German, or Russian), Disney, Musical Theatre, Crossover, Art Song, Sacred Song, Film Songs, Ballads, Opera (English, Italian, French, or German), and Folk Song (including English, French, Spanish, German, Chinese, or Russian). Repertoire is always selected to support healthy development and confidence.
Exams, safeguarding, and professional standards
I hold an Enhanced Disclosure DBS Certificate (Certificate Number 001827120532, dated 18th April 2023) and am a Registered Private Teacher with the Incorporated Society of Musicians (ISM).
I prepare students for ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) and Trinity College London examinations. I accompany all students on the piano during lessons and most examinations, and also provide training in the use of backing tracks and mic technique where appropriate.
Performance Anxiety and Confidence Support
I work with both children and adults who experience nerves, performance anxiety, or confidence-related challenges around singing. Lessons incorporate gentle, practical strategies to support focus, regulation, and ease, helping singers feel more settled in their body and mind. The aim is not to eliminate nerves, but to develop understanding, resilience, and trust in the voice, using anchoring strategies that reduce anxiety to a manageable level and enable singers to harness nervous energy constructively - supporting confident rehearsal, performance, and enjoyment.
Mentoring for Singing Teachers
For those interested in teaching, I also offer tailored mentoring for aspiring or early-career singing teachers. Mentoring sessions provide a supportive, reflective space to explore vocal technique, repertoire choices, lesson structure, and the realities of professional practice. Alongside running a thriving private studio, I am a Peripatetic Singing and Piano Teacher at The Maynard Independent Girls’ School in Exeter and an Approved Associate Teacher with the Torbay Music Hub.
Professional background and outcomes
I am an active member of several professional organisations, including the Incorporated Society of Musicians (ISM) and the Association of Teachers of Singing (AOTOS) in the UK. I regularly attend conferences, workshops, and CPD events to ensure my teaching remains current and evidence-informed.
Previously, I taught at Razzamataz Theatre School in Plymouth and at Stagecoach Theatre School in Torquay before focusing more fully on my performance commitments.
Many of my students have gone on to study at prestigious institutions including the Royal Northern College of Music, Trinity Laban, the Royal Academy of Music, and Leeds College of Music. Others have pursued careers in opera, musical theatre, and the wider entertainment industry, with several receiving scholarships to Sylvia Young Theatre School, Italia Conti, and Leeds Cathedral.

PLEASE NOTE: In July 2020, my husband bought me 2 adorable kittens for my birthday (Bob & Ginge). They are very friendly and very musical cats who, on occasion, like to attend music lessons. Please be aware of this if you or your child has any allergies (although I do have a very effective air purifier that cleans the air every 3 minutes, which has resulted in many students with severe cat allergies being able to continue to have singing lessons in my studio) or phobias. UPDATE: In May 2021, we welcomed a new furry addition to our household - a black/silver Maine Coon called Drax, who adores music. UPDATE: In July 2024, we welcomed another new addition to our feline crew - a Persian called Rosie, who is very vocal and takes after her cat guardian!
